The ADT Guide Update

This month we've been working to refine our guide information and increase the resolution of our maps for the section of the American Discovery Trail that follows Illinois' River to River Trail. This segment has incredible rock formations, caves, and...petticoats!

Sand Cave - the largest sandstone cave in North America and part of the Underground Railroad. The ADT passes less than a mile to this National Register of Historic Places site.

Illinois South - Segment 4 - Goreville to Eddyville

This month we've been working to refine our guide information and increase the resolution of our maps for the section of the American Discovery Trail that follows Illinois' River to River Trail.

The Segment 4 segment starts in Ferne Clyffe State Park with its unique rock formations and passes by Hawk's Cave, a 150-foot long shelter bluff. Then it's on to Cache Lake where the ADT crosses the Tunnel Hill Rail Trail.

The ADT passes to the north of Millstone Bluff a prehistoric Native American settlement, and to the south of Sand Cave (above), the largest sandstone cave in North America and part of the Underground Railroad both on the National Register of Historic sites.

Just before Eddyville, you pass through the Crow Knob Ecological Area, with a 30-40 foot rock monolith that is about the length of a football field, and Pettycoat Junction, an equestrian tie-up that get's its name for the trail signage and trees with women’s slips or petticoats hanging from them.

On the ADT

January-March are generally the most quiet months on the American Discovery Trail. The snowfall out west forced Alex Seling and Crazy Vet to peel off the ADT and head southwest...and are now making a bee-line to the coast of Southern California to complete their Coast-to-Coast trek.

Rocky Mountain High

One of the few remaining on the American Discovery Trail currently is "Rocky Mountain High" Briana-DeSanctis who crossed into West Virginia this week and posted up this joyful video describing how – "The Trail Provides."
